Environment

ENRC management is committed to the efficient use of resources and to reducing any negative impacts of Group operations on water, air and land. Improvements in environmental protection have been an area of focus for ENRC for a number of years.

ENRC commenced the implementation of formal environmental management systems in 2003 across the Ferroalloys, Iron Ore, Alumina & Aluminium and Energy Divisions - the first organisation in the Republic of Kazakhstan to do so. By 2009, all operations in the country had received international compliance certificates.

Kazchrome’s Waste Management Programme has been in place and adhered to the highest standards for a number of years. ENRC has also adopted a new Chemicals Policy focused on reducing the impact of hazardous waste by introducing a chemical waste management system, a first for Kazakhstan.

As the Group develops internationally, ENRC will take steps to ensure that all activities reach the highest standards of environmental best practice. Steps already taken to reduce the Group’s environmental impact include: investment in new technologies, a reduction in energy and water use, programmes to minimise landscape and biodiversity impact, and strict monitoring of all emissions waste and the effect on surrounding areas.

A new framework for measuring our performance in relation to waste management, air emissions and water discharges is currently being completed. This includes a new environmental database with new performance indicators, benchmarks and targets, in a move towards common international approaches for reporting.

We have identified seven key areas of our environmental performance to report on: climate change, energy, emissions, water, waste, toxics and biodiversity.
