The Alumina and Aluminium Division

The Group's Alumina and Aluminium Division is the ninth largest supplier of traded alumina by volume in the world (Source: CRU, 2008).

The division comprises two separate business units: Aluminium of Kazakhstan (AoK) and Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter (KAS), and integrates two bauxite mining units, a limestone mine, a power station, an alumina refinery and aluminium smelter.

In 2005 ENRC started the construction of Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter, the first smelter in Kazakhstan, in Pavlodar, north-eastern Kazakhstan.

Upon completion, the smelting complex, which spans over 190 hectares, will comprise two electrolysis facilities, a foundry, and a facility for the manufacture of anodes and other auxiliary branches of the smelter.  It is located within 10 km of the alumina refinery, which supplies the smelter's alumina, and within 26 km of the power station, which supplies the smelter with electricity.

Phase 1 of the construction, with initial capacity of 62,500 tonnes per annum was completed in December 2007. The current capacity of the smelter is 125,000 tonnes of primary aliminium per annum.
Phase 2, with a capacity of 250,000 tonnes per annum, is currently under construction and is planned to be completed by 2011.

The Alumina and Aluminium Division currently sells alumina and various other products, including limestone and gallium, aluminium sulphate and fireclay, which are by-products of the alumina production process.  With the completion of the smelter, the division is poised to service demand for aluminium both in the Republic of Kazakhstan and worldwide.
